1933 R28 One Pound Riddle/Sheehan good EF. Reference Number: Renniks # 28. This note had a solid purchasing power at the depths of the Great Depression.
Sir Ernest Riddle was Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia between June 1st 1927 and February 28th 1938. Sir Harry Sheehan was Secretary to the Commonwealth Treasury from April 29th 1932 until September 1938. Following the Great Depression began in 1930, governments around the world began to switch from the gold standard note system to the legal tender note standard system.
First issued in the depths of the depression, this Riddle Sheehan Legal Tender one pound note was equivalent to several days wages for the average worker. At a time when a third of the adult population was out of work, it's hardly surprising that nearly all of the pound notes issued at that time had to be spent on life necessities, and not set aside for a rainy day. This particular note has crisp paper and sharp edges all the way around. Several light vertical bends are evident under direct light. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.
